“A Mediocre Life” · “Awakening of the Soul” deck · #39

Today's card is "A Mediocre Life." Not the gentlest thing to hear in the morning — it doesn't pat you on the head, it asks you straight: are you actually living, or just sitting out the day until evening comes? I know this feeling myself — when everything looks fine, there's a job, there's a roof over your head, and inside it's dry, like the soul hasn't been watered in a while. Not a catastrophe, not pain — just greyness. And greyness pulls you down worse than pain ever could, because nobody complains about it, people just endure it for years and call it "stability."
I'll say plainly where the trap is: mediocrity almost never looks like defeat. It looks like a reasonable choice. Didn't take the risk — didn't lose anything. Didn't step into the cold water — didn't freeze. In my worst years I sat in exactly that spot: afraid to take a step, not because I feared falling, but because I feared admitting that my whole life up to that point had been exactly this — a familiar route with not a single turn in it. Admitting that is harder than making the turn itself. The soul doesn't argue with you out loud — it just fades quietly, bit by bit, and you only notice once you haven't been burning for a long time.
Try one thing today: find the place in your day where you act on autopilot "because that's how it's always been" — and do it differently there. A small choice, not a whole overturned life. Call instead of texting. Walk instead of driving your usual route. Say the thing you usually swallow. Nothing has to turn out beautifully — the point isn't the result, it's feeling that the wheel is still in your hands and hasn't jammed for good. A bright life isn't about daily heroics. It's about choosing, at least sometimes, on your own — not out of sheer inertia.
"Mediocrity isn't a fate — it's just yesterday's choice, repeated today."
