“Asceticism” · “Voice of God” deck · #40

Today's card is Asceticism. The word alone makes almost everyone flinch — they expect punishment, deprivation, clenched teeth. But that's not really what it is. It's not about breaking yourself. It's about finally hearing yourself. The body is loud all day — hungry, tired, wanting a distraction — and you can live your whole life inside that noise without once noticing something quiet inside has been trying to say something important. Fasting, silence, stepping away — none of it is a performance. It's just a way to turn the volume down outside so you can hear what's happening inside.
I know what this feels like in the body — a dry fast, where the second day breaks you and the third day suddenly brings a clarity you can't buy any other way. I'll be honest: the first hours are always ugly. You want to quit, find yourself an excuse — work, plans, "not the right time." That's the actual trap — the fasting itself isn't the hard part. The hard part is not caving in that first moment of weakness, and not lying to yourself that it's about health when really it's plain fear of being alone with yourself. People mix up asceticism with self-punishment, a trophy of willpower to brag about later. The point is the exact opposite — not to prove something to yourself, but to go quiet enough, for long enough, to finally hear what's been silent for years.
You don't need forty days for this. One day without excess is enough — no food after six, no phone an hour before bed, no talking, if you can manage it. Just give your body and your head a pause and see what surfaces once the noise settles. Something will surface — not always pleasant, but real. Asceticism isn't about deprivation. It's about the fact that behind all that noise, someone's been waiting this whole time to finally be heard.
"Silence inside is worth more than a full stomach — it holds what a full stomach always drowned out."
