After the stars and the moonlight, sunlight finally appears in the Tarot. The half-lit, hazy uncertainty surrounding the Moon disappears, and with it goes every trace of the insecurity and ignorance that has accompanied the young Magician from the first card all the way to the card of the Moon. The great Sun, granting clarity, allows everything to shine with new light.

Although the word is feminine in gender, in German and in many other languages the Sun is considered exclusively masculine. It is called "the Lord of Light" or "the Lord of Life," because without the sun life would be impossible. It is also known as "the Lord of Love," because it gives us light and warmth freely, asking nothing in return. In the end, the Sun is also "the Lord of Freedom," because without our own inner suns, we could not experience boundless freedom.

In the background of the Tarot of the Aquarian Age card, we see a human figure standing atop a mountain, raising its arms in the joy of life and freedom. This person is free as a bird. He looks as though he wishes for nothing more than to fly to the Sun, to express gratitude for all the good that has been bestowed upon him. Throughout the whole of his life, the Sun has always given him nourishment and joy.

Life pours forth from the solar disk on the Tarot card, as a sign of the rebirth of the eternal bond between heaven and earth. Life is sustained by life.

In the foreground we see a sketch. On the right is depicted a brick wall, and two halves of a sunflower above it. One of these flowers has been fully drawn, the other is merely a sketch. The wall represents a protective wall, behind which people who have reached the phase of development shown on this card find refuge, shielding their happiness, joy and success from hostile eyes. The sunflowers behind this wall symbolize the fact that the initiate has rediscovered harmony with nature. The unfinished sunflower represents the initiate's vow to respect and protect nature, so that future generations may find life on Earth worth living.

The card of the Sun signifies total realization on the plane of matter, soul and mind. This is the card of harmony, of happiness with your partner and in your profession. It embodies ideas such as self-confidence, self-knowledge, awareness and independence. The man and woman who have developed thus far along the path of the Tarot can, at last, enjoy the fruits of their success. Deep love and humility characterize such individuals, since they have learned that everything that comes into their life is, in truth, a gift from God. But this card also embodies the liberation of the sexes: there is no longer a state of polarity, the masculine and the feminine are in harmony. The opposites have merged. This does not mean that man and woman will no longer make sexual love. On the contrary, they truly will: each will love the other in awareness of his or her individuality and with respect for the other, for the Thou. In this most intimate act of love, both can understand that the power that moves them to love was, is, and always will be the energy of God. The woman embodies the feminine source of this aspect, receiving and giving shelter; the man embodies the masculine source, which creates and protects. Together, man and woman once again form a unity, and their eternal longing is finally satisfied.

From the standpoint of numerology, the card of the Sun bears the number nineteen, a very mystical number. The sum of its digits equals ten. The first digit in the number ten (one) symbolizes unity; the second digit (zero) symbolizes infinite space. Ten is thus the fulfillment and completion of creation.

The Hebrew letter of the card is RESH (head). Just as the head directs the body, so too will positive qualities eventually outweigh the negative. Humanity will be able to pass through the "eye of the needle," represented by the letter QOPH on the previous card. Filled with joy and excitement, the heavens await humanity.

The rune GEBO means gift. GEBO embodies generosity and hospitality toward guests. Generous people are those who can allow things to happen. By giving freely, they open the gates through which abundance and joy can enter their lives. GEBO also symbolizes the mystery of sexual union and the transcendence of polarities.

The astrological sign of the card is the Sun, the source of vital energy. The power of the Sun awakens the passive soul, wandering lost in the earthly. The Sun rules whenever life energies rise, when the will to act comes to the fore. The Sun awakens human beings from lethargy and accompanies them to the next phase, or card, where the awakened and the initiated await us.
